Gretchen is a graduate of Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. She majored in Nursing and following graduation went into the Army Nurse Corps. After completing a tour of duty at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC she relocated to San Francisco to join her husband, Alan, who was in the Navy. They stayed in California raising their two sons until 1989. After which the family had several relocations to Boulder, Colorado, back to the Bay area, off to Portland, Oregon and back to San Diego in 1999.
